  • My boyfriend and I have started renting a two bedroomed terrace house in Durham. We have gas central heating paid on a meter, and put the heating on for four hours each week day and five at the weekends, currently we are paying almost thirty pounds per week, is this average?

    NO WAY!!!
    There must be something wrong.
Check the people before you paid their bill ( call your gas supply )
You could be paying their debt!!!
I lived in a 2 bed house which had 8 rads 2 of which were double rads and I was paying £10 a week sometimes £15.The heating was on most of the day cos my ex didn’t work so was at home all day.

If the tenants before you were in debt with the gas, it would have been added onto their meter so it could be that each time you put money/cards in the meter, it takes so much for their old bill.

If this is so don’t worry,as you will get it all back dated to when you moved in.

    Good luck.

  • i have been out of town for a long time, no one lives in the house, the only thing running on the gas is the hot water heater, no one is taking shower, no one is washing dishes, no hot water is being used, should it take this much money to just keep the water warm in the tank ? i had trouble with the gas company before with anouther house because i had all the main valves turned off inside the house, and they said i was still useing gas. so watts up.

Two questions please. What size water heater ( 40 or 50 gallons or even more?) and what temperature do you have your water set at in the heater? I have a 40 gallon tank but I admit I keep my water very hot at 180 degrees. I dont have small children in the house, so I am not worried about little ones getting burnt, plus I can take long showers by using very little hot water with a lot of cold water. In my mind, I think I am saving in the long run. But to answer your question, when the water in your hot water tank cools down, it will use gas to heat it back up to your setting. I pay an average of $45 a month in gas ( I dont use gas for home heating,,,,I use a pellet stove). If you want to see a difference, try setting the temp lower on the tank heater, but I dont see a bad problem at what you are paying. I hope you found this useful

  • My rent is 675 which goes over the recommended percentage of 30% of my monthly income. I make close to $1900 a month. Its a one bedroom and I have no kids or debt besides a student loan. How much will my electric bill be?

Your electric bill will depend on a lot of factors such as the size of your apartment, how energy efficient the appliances are, how well it is insullated, the weather where you live and your habits.

To reduce your electric bill: make sure all doors and windows are fully closed when you are running the heat or a/c. Close curtains or blinds in the summer to avoid letting sun heat an apt you are trying to cool. Set the thermostat a few degrees higher (or lower depending on the season) and consider turning it when you are away from home as well, such as when you are at work. You can also use fewer lamps and handwash dishes. Check with your energy co. some have lower rates for using energy at off-peak hours–for example in my area it is cheaper to run the washer/dryer at night then during the day.

Cable averages about $55/month but most cable companies have a basic package for about $15 which gives you 20 or so channels but you have to ask for it. Same thing with the phone company (assuming you have a land line)-Tell them you want the cheapest plan they have (often $10-15 less than the standard quote).

To save on food don't eat out as often, obviously. It is also usually cheaper to make your own food than buy pre-maid meals so learn to cook if you can.

  • If the house I am renting is poorly insulated (windows, doors, etc.) and maybe other things that would cause electric bill increases, could the landlord be held responsible for anything? also i thik there might be termites and i don't know much about them, what are the landlords responsibilities pertaining to termites or other pests ?

No, you need to pay your own bills. The windows, doors, etc were all agreeable to you when you moved in.

He does not have to do anything about termites, but you might let him know, they will cause a big problem long term.

  • If I leave a 600 watt lightbulb on for 18 hours a day for 7 days a week, at a charge of $0.06/kWh, how much money would that cost per month?

    looks like 600X18×7… 75.6 KwHrs

from a costs of 4.536 dollars.

    thats per week. oops.

I guess if you average a month to 30 days, you are looking at 19.44
